Il progetto prende il nome dal termine utilizzato nel 2000 dal chimico Paul Josef Crutzen, per indicare l’era geologica in cui viviamo. Un’epoca in cui l’uomo ha modificato profondamente l’ambiente. L’accumulo dell’ anidride carbonica, la deforestazione, l’estinzione di specie animali, i cambiamenti climatici e il ciclo dei rifiuti sono segni indelebili dell’influenza umana sull’evoluzione della vita sulla terra.
Il fotografo Edward Burtynsky racconta da oltre trent’anni, attraverso le arti visive, l’impatto dell’uomo sul pianeta. “Anthropocene” è il suo ultimo progetto, realizzato con i registi Jennifer Baichwal e Nicholas de Pencier, un’esperienza multimediale e immersiva che dopo Toronto e Ottawa è visitabile alla Fondazione MAST di Bologna fino al 22 settembre. La mostra è un viaggio tramite foto, enormi murales ad alta risoluzione, videoinstallazioni, installazioni di realtà aumentata e il film “Anthropocene: The Human Epoch” per far riflettere il visitatore sulle conseguenze e sui cambiamenti degli ecosistemi, sulla perdita di biodiversità e sullo sfruttamento di risorse naturali terrestri. Forse dovremmo ricordarci tutti che la Terra non è una risorsa infinita.

Anthropocene: The Human Epoch is a Canadian documentary film, which premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.[2] The third film in a series of collaborations between filmmakers Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier with photographer Edward Burtynsky, following Manufactured Landscapes and Watermark, the film explores the emerging concept of a geological epoch called the Anthropocene, defined by the impact of humanity on natural development.[3] It is part of the larger Anthropocene Project which includes museum shows that opened at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada in September 2018[3] and the publication of two books, one centered on essays, and the other one on photographs.
In December 2018, the Toronto International Film Festival named the film to its annual year-end Canada’s Top Ten list.[4] In January 2019, it was announced as the winner of the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award from the Toronto Film Critics Association,[5] and of the Vancouver Film Critics Circle award for Best Canadian Documentary Film.[6]
The film won two Canadian Screen Awards at the 7th Canadian Screen Awards in 2019, for Best Feature Length Documentary and Best Cinematography in a Documentary (de Pencier).
